August 11, 2024 —Summer in our garden

The yarrow starts from Proven Winners have taken off in front of our veggie garden. The 10 raised beds and 20+ grow trays are surrounded by deer fencing. This year I am growing tomatoes (Roma, Black Krim, and orange cherry tomatoes), cucumbers, zucchini, regular and Asian eggplant, potatoes, artichoke, bush green beans, snow peas, raspberries, Marion berries and blackberries.

The Rudbekias (Black eyed Susans) are a giant variety and a real show stopper in front of the veggie garden.

The roses we received from Week’s Roses last year are spectacular. Beautiful, aromatic and prolific.

One of our projects this summer was to add large stepping stones to various pathways in the garden. They make for sure footing and reduce the amount of grass we have to mow. We are also focused on deferred maintenance— having the driveway resealed and pruning a number of overgrown trees. Two of our pine trees have bark beetles and will need to be treated. Never a dull moment in the garden!

This is a photo of our makeshift greenhouse. Gordon grows plant plugs in grow trays until they are hardy enough to plant in the garden itself. We just open up the garage door to our shop and let the sun shine in.

Can you believe we have wisteria blooming in August? A second blooming season! There’s always something in bloom no matter what the season.
