This spring and summer in West Linn has been especially beautiful, with trees, shrubs and perennials blooming their heads off. Right now, our hydrangeas are the stars of the garden, with echinacea and rudabekia (Black-eyed Susens) gearing up for mid-summer bursts of color. The roses continue to bloom, as well.
Bed 1 in the pasture has a multitude of hydrangeas: far left Kimono (red), Pink Dynamo Mountain Hydrangea (in front of the bigger unnamed pink hydrangea, a blue one that is unnamed and Cherry Go Round (the dwarf red one in front of the blue hydrangea).
This is a Kimono dwarf hydrangea–a rare red that looked great in the bouquets we made when the West Linn Garden Club served as Grand Marshal in the Willamette Old Time Parade on July 11.
Another rare red hygrangea is Cherry Go Round from Bloom’n Easy. The flowers and leaves turn almost black in the sun..
Unfortunately, some of our hydrangeas are unnamed– this one is a beauty.
Here is another unnamed one, but it is beautiful, as well.
The yellow spikes are Liguria Rocket, next to another beautiful pink hydrangea that is unnamed.
And while this one isn’t in our garden (I spotted it on the parade route), it is an amazing blue, I couldn’t resist sharing it.
A few weeks ago, the roses in front of my favorite blue hydrangea were in full bloom.
The echinacea we purchased from Terra Nova Nurseries in nearby Canby add beautiful color during the heat of the summer. They should last through the fall.
We opened our garden to the Hardy Plant Society in early June. The West Linn Garden Club came to visit for Summer Happy Garden Hours on June 16. The Clackamas District of Garden Clubs (county-wide) will have a pot luck lunch at our house on July 25, and the Greater Portland Iris Society will have it’s pot luck and annual auction of iris at our home on August 8. That’s the beauty of a demonstration garden– a place to share our passion with others.
Now take a whirl around the Green PLANeT Gardens in early July. If you look carefully, you can spot snow on Mount Hood (they ski there in July!). You might want to set this at .5 speed so you can savor the sights. https://youtu.be/8SDr8Kyv8ds
I always wanted to have a house full of fresh flowers, without decimating the garden. I think I have finally achieved that goal!
